This body of artwork deals with consumerism and excessiveness in adolescent females in the United States. In my photos I tried to showcase the abundance of material goods most girls have and how, despite the fact that they have a lot already, they still go out and buy more. I have created an atmosphere within my photographs that is supposed to makes people stop and think about all of the goods that they posses and how those possessions truly begin to possess them. The girls I portray in my images do not see their consumer excessiveness as a problem because it is a way of life for them; their possessions make them happy. To illustrate this notion of consumer excessiveness and to also bring to light on how material objects add color and zest to a girl’s life I have taken rooms in an average American girl’s home and photographed them twice. Once filled with an abundance of material goods and second time with nothing in them except the furniture. The dual images are supposed to showcase how even though material goods may add pizzazz to a young girl’s life, they may also clutter it to the extent that they begin to possess their owner.
Another aspect of my work deals with advertisements because ads play a huge role in a woman's spending. I have photographed various purses to create a mock ad campaign, in which the purses are captured both closed and open. The images of the open bags reveal various goods that have been stored inside, illustrating how the owner has run out of room to keep things due to all of the objects that they keep buying. The images showcase how people do not need that next “it” bag, because if one continues to purchase various goods, before long the objects begin to take over your home and eventually your life.
